This is a really fun activity for starting to learn about properties of materials and the effect of gradient on speed. we split the experiment into two parts, first we tested different materials to see which worked best as a boat and then we raced the boats down different inclines.. The sailboat is a form of transportation, a type of recreation ranging from simple craft to the most elaborate racing yacht, and even a form of housing. a huge yacht with custom fittings and a crew is a symbol of wealth. a one-person boat with a tiny sail represents freedom.. Students use modeling clay, a material that is denser than water and thus ordinarily sinks in water, to discover the principle of buoyancy. they begin by designing and building boats out of clay that will float in water, and then refine their designs so that their boats will carry as great a load (metal washers) as possible..
The boat building industry has entered an unprecedented period of experimentation of new materials for use in the fabrication of what were once called fiberglass hulls. those of us who have been around the boat building scene for a while have seen a lot o f new ideas and materials come and go over the years.. We record: wood boat, styrofoam boat, aluminum boat, plastic boat, cardboard boat, tub of water, gram weights. as students finish copying the materials, i provide each student with a copy of the boat experiment procedure to glue into their foldable.. Working with wood. wood is the only natural boat building material used today, and although it generally requires more maintenance than the more common fiberglass vessels, a well cared for boat built of wood will always attract admiring glances when she slips into view..
