Skin on frame (sof) is not only one of the oldest methods for building a boat, it is also one of the easiest. to build a boat, one covers a frame with fabric. the simplest sof craft are made from plywood frames and wooden stringers. more complex designs use steamed ribs to hold stringers.. The australians (in the 16-footers, the western australians) were the leaders in pushing lightweight frame and stringer construction for their performance classes. even back in 1959 the plywood they used for the 16-footers was 4 mm., which is really light for what is essentially an open boat..
Learn how to measure and cut stringers for repairing a rotten boat hull. see part 2 for more. comments welcome!. Traditional ply on frame construction consisted of making quite a heavy framework which was usually a combination of transverse frames and longitudinal stringers, hog etc on a flat building berth and then putting on the ply hull skin oversize and trimming it back.. Transverse framing for a metal boat under construction. note the thin lateral stringers holding the transverse frames together (photo courtesy of billy black) a metal boat must also be well insulated. metal conducts both sound and heat very well, and living inside an uninsulated hull would be nothing less than an ordeal..
