Boat construction comparison there are alternatives to plywood in the stringers, or floor, as backups for cleats, in handrails, around hatches and in the transom. it doesn't matter how good the materials are if they aren't being used correctly.. The traditional boat building material used for hull and spar construction. it is buoyant, widely available and easily worked. it is a popular material for small boats (of e.g. 6-metre (20 ft) length; such as dinghies and sailboats).. There is no such thing as the “best” material for kayak hulls. the end! just kidding. you have a lot of choices when it comes to the material that kayaks can be made from. which material you choose depends on what you want to pay, how light the boat needs to be, and what you plan to do with the kayak..
Jbehr, the choice of hull material has a lot to do with several factors, one of which is it's expected sea going environment. at 40' steel is starting to become a competitive material, compared to 'glass and wood, in regard to price of construction per pound. smaller craft in steel would tend to be heavier then necessary.. The move to incorporate such materials in boat hulls is primarily an effort to reduce materials cost and produce a cheaper product, one that ultimately poses higher risks of hull failure and produces boats that are less rugged, and with a shorter life span.. All other hull materials, metal, reinforced plastics (fiberglass, etc), concrete, etc. all are made from non-renewable raw materials. this is not true with wood structures. and wood i think is one of the most attractive looking materials, even as a laminate..
